For the Lord thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the Lord thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.
-Deuteronomy 2:7
I always find it extraordinary the way something will suddenly strike you in an "I really needed to hear that"-edness.
And that somehow, although the children of Israel lacked permanent homes and a relatively dust-free life, yet still, they lacked nothing.
And I think that although I lack things, that really, I lack nothing too.

Beth dear, I have been pondering this week on the power in the phrase, "We have sufficient for our needs." Power. Not just a pithy turn of the phrase. Not just something wise. It is powerful!
I remember in a talk once (can't pin it down any closer than that in my memory) hearing that "happiness does not consist of having what you want, but rather in wanting what you have."
My life's experiences seem to be teaching me this lesson over and over. Maybe someday it will sink in.
Actually, it's not a talk, it's that Sheryl Crow song... "It's not having what you want. It's wanting what you've got." The rest of the lyrics, however, are totally meaningless.
And, wow! Deuteronomy? Who knew?
OK, but I have never HEARD the Sheryl Crow song. I really have only just barely heard of Sheryl Crow. (I seriously am quite challenged in terms of pop culture, non?) So she must have gotten the lyric from the same source that the speaker of my anonymous talk did.
In any case, it is a sweet and powerful truth, and highly appropriate for the week of Thanksgiving. Thanks for the insight, Beth
Thanks Beth, that was something I needed to hear. I love you and miss you. I can't believe that I have to spend ANOTHER Thanksgiving not with you! But at least you get to hang out with me for Christmas, right?
Mom and Jo, I'm pretty sure I recognize both the Sheryl Crow song and the talk, although like Mom, I can't pinpoint exactly which talk it is. (But I've got the Sheryl Crow song stuck in my head now. Thanks a lot.) Good sentiments, both, though.
And Pete, glad to hear that anything I've written was something anyone needed to hear, although this particular thing was also something I needed to hear (or, er, read). And YAH! HOW are you guys going to be able to enjoy Thanksgiving without me to help you eat that darn turkey? Seriously. But it'll be fun to hang out with you all at Christmastime. Give kisses to Mary & her fam for me, since I won't see them in December!
