All things Bronte

Why are some people so cool?

So cool that they can write entire blogs about Charlotte Bronte and her works?

I'll just add one more name to that list of people I admire.

And also, has anyone here read Villette? If so, do you think I would like it?

So, I have it on decent authority that I am a HUGE fan of the Bronte sisters. They are all 3 freaking amazing. I've read just about everything Bronte I can get my hands on (novels, juvenilia, biographies). And I've read "Vilette." It's pretty good...not Charlotte's best, in my opinion, but not too bad. Next to "Jane Eyre," I liked "Shirley" the best. If you want another fabulous Bronte read, try "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" by Anne. So, so good.

Which reminds me...the university here is putting on the play "Jane Eyre" later this month. I am SO going. Which also reminds me...I need to buy tickets.

Hooray for Bronte fans! I swear we must be kindred spirits.

I will definitely have to pick up Shirley then. I blush to admit that I've only read Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights thus far. However, when I went to a bookstore yesterday, I was nearly overcome by a desire to read everything that those Brontes have produced.

I do believe the kindredness of our spirits is indisputable. :^)

Vilette is good, once you get over the fact that the narrator isn't trustworthy and is keeping things back from the reader. Elizabeth Gaskell, in her Life of Charlotte Bronte, both implies that it's autobiographical and skirts the issue, because she wrote her Life only two or three years after Charlotte died, while Charlotte's husband and her former teacher were both still alive.

I still haven't read Shirley, or the Tenant of Wildfell Hall. It is the reason why "Currer Bell" stopped being anonymous. People thought that the works of all three of the Bronte sisters were written by "him", and Charlotte wanted her sisters to receive proper credit.

Excellent! I'll have to pick up Shirley then too. Blast it. I need a larger book allowance.
